Breast Cancer Awareness Month at HOMA: 14 Top Tips to Protect Your Health and Wellbeing

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month 🎗️, a time to come together, raise awareness, and show support for those affected by breast cancer. This year’s theme is Every Story is Unique, Every Journey Matters. Every breast cancer diagnosis is personal and with every diagnosis is a story of courage, resilience, and hope.

At HOMA in Phuket Thailand, we believe in community, connection, and making a positive impact. That’s why this month, we’re turning awareness into action with special events designed to educate, empower, and support our residents.

Why Breast Cancer Awareness Matters

Breast cancer remains the most common cancer among women worldwide. Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women worldwide. Sadly, in 2022, approximately 2.3 million women were diagnosed and another 670,000 died from the disease.1

While the statistics may sound overwhelming, the truth is early detection saves lives. Regular screenings, self-check practices, and knowledge about prevention can significantly reduce risks and improve outcomes. By creating awareness, we not only support those in treatment and recovery but also inspire proactive steps for prevention.

Top Tips: How to Stay Healthy and Reduce Your Risk

  1. Schedule Regular Screenings: Encourage yourself and loved ones to keep up with mammograms and checkups.
Women 40 and older should get an annual or biennial screening mammogram to catch cancer early.
  2. Practice Self-Checks: Learn proper techniques and make it a routine.
  3. Stay Informed: Attend events, workshops, or talks to increase your knowledge about breast health.
  4. Support the Cause: Participate in fundraisers, wear pink, or share educational content with your network.
  5. Promote Wellness: Breast health is part of overall well-being and maintain a balanced lifestyle with exercise, nutrition, and stress management.
  6. Maintain a healthy weight: Being overweight, especially after menopause, can increase your risk.
  7. Get regular physical activity: Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity exercise per week.
  8. Limit alcohol intake: Drinking alcohol increases breast cancer risk, so it’s safest to avoid it or drink in moderation.
  9. Don’t smoke: Quitting smoking can significantly lower your risk.
  10. Breastfeed: If possible, breastfeed your babies for as long as you can.
  11. Eat a healthy diet: Focus on whole grains, fruits, and vegetables while limiting processed foods and red meat.
  12. Discuss hormone therapy: Talk to your doctor about the risks of hormone replacement therapy and oral contraceptives.
  13. Know your Family History: A full picture of your family history can help guide conversations with your doctor and better assess things like when you should be screened and what lifestyle changes are needed.
  14. If you know you have a high risk, consider your other options: You may carry a breast cancer–associated gene mutation, such as BRCA1/2 or PALB2, for example and so you could have other options such as surgery or medications. 2
