What is the VIKASA Complete Class?

The VIKASA Complete Class is more than just a yoga session; it’s an immersive experience crafted to align your physical practice with your spiritual journey. Lasting typically 120 minutes, this class is designed to accommodate all levels, from beginners to advanced practitioners.

Modern life constantly takes us away from our inherent natural state of being – we are frequently stressed, anxious and unbalanced. The mind is constantly in the future or ruminating on the past. We are very rarely present, focused, calm or clear. In a VIKASA Complete Class, many elements combine to bring you into a state of present awareness and to help you find that state of peace, focus and deep relaxation that is becoming more and more elusive in modern society. Ultimately, yoga is meditation in which we learn how to harness and naturally control our attention. Those introduced to the VIKASA Method attest to the power of this practice.

Components of the Complete VIKASA Class

  1. Dynamic Asana Practice: Flow through a sequence of dynamic asanas that build strength, flexibility, and endurance. Each pose is carefully selected to challenge and invigorate your body while promoting alignment and focus. Yoga poses are not necessarily complex, rather the challenge comes in the longer holds and the journey inwards through the breath..
  2. Pranayama and Breathwork: Vikasa Complete Classes incorporate the power of breath through pranayama techniques that enhance vitality and cultivate a deeper connection to your inner self. Typically a Complete Class will include a more activating breathwork exercise such as kapalabati or ‘shining skull’ breath and also a more relaxing or centering breathwork practice such as ujayi breathing or box breathing.
  3. Meditation and Mindfulness: All Vikasa Complete Classes include a period of meditation to encourage your mind to quieten and the focus to shift from the external to the internal. Essentially, the entre class is about finding this meditative state even in the asana poses, however a seated meditation practice is also included usually before the final Savasana.
  4. Relaxation and Savasana: The practice concludes with a period of deep relaxation and savasana, integrating the benefits of your session and leaving you rejuvenated, grounded and refreshed. Unlike other yoga styles, the Vikasa Method offers longer savasanas, typically between 10-20 minutes, to allow for deep relaxation. This is one of the key benefits of the practice.
