Family Things to Do in Phuket This Green Season

Family things to do in Phuket: families and children participating in acookie decoration workshop at HOMA Cherngtalay

Looking for family things to do in Phuket during green season? Don’t let the rain put you off, because this is the time of year a lot of us who live here actually love.

We call it green season, and the name says it all. The rain usually comes in one big burst, an hour of proper downpour, then it clears and the sun’s back out. What it leaves behind is a completely different island with cooler air, everything washed clean, and the whole place gone green. The waterfalls run again, the jungle comes alive, and the crowds disappear.

For families, green season (roughly July to October) is honestly one of the best times to visit Phuket. You just stop chasing the sunny-day beach routine and lean into what the island does best right now which is green jungle, calm city, and proper local life. Here’s how we do it, rain or shine.

When It’s Dry: Get Outside With the Kids

Mornings are usually your best bet for sunshine, so that’s when to get out and about.

Go find a waterfall: This is the only season the waterfalls actually run properly, so make the most of it. Bang Pae and Ton Sai waterfalls are both inside Khao Phra Thaeo national park up in Thalang. Bang Pae is the bigger one with a pool you can swim in; Ton Sai is quieter, with a nice jungle walk to reach it. One 200-baht ticket (100 for kids) covers both. This is where local families go on a hot weekend. You’ll see them picnicking and cooling off in the water, not sitting on a crowded beach. Just wear proper shoes, because the path gets slippery after rain. Right next to Bang Pae is the Gibbon Rehabilitation Project, where the kids can learn about rescued gibbons, it’s free, but leave a small donation if you can.

Paddle the calm mangroves: Here’s a proper green-season move: while the west-coast beaches are rough, the mangrove channels up at Tha Chatchai, on the northern tip of the island, stay as calm as a pool. You can rent a family kayak and paddle through the winding root tunnels while the kids spot crabs, mudskippers, and birds. It’s completely sheltered from the wind and waves — one of the nicest things you can do when the sea’s too wild for swimming.

Zipline through the jungle: The jungle is at its best right now. Hanuman World has zipline courses and skywalks through the treetops, with different options for different ages, so it works well for braver older kids and teens. Flying over the canopy after a bit of rain, with that fresh jungle smell, beats doing it in the January heat.

Visit the Big Buddha and Wat Chalong: The big white marble Big Buddha sits up on the hill above Chalong, with great views over the island. Kids can walk around, ring the bells, and it’s an easy hour or two. While you’re nearby, stop at Wat Chalongม it’s Phuket’s most important temple, where many Phuket families come to pray and make merit all year round. It’s especially calm in green season.

When It Rains: Indoor Things to Do in Phuket

The trick is having a rainy-day plan ready before you need it. There’s plenty to do indoors.

Aquaria Phuket: A big aquarium under Central Phuket mall. Walk through the glass tunnel with sharks and rays swimming over your head, catch a feeding time, and stay completely dry.

Get creative at Phuket Art Village: This is a little community of local artists in their own studios, a lot of them making art out of recycled ocean waste. It’s mostly under cover, entry is free, and some studios run hands-on workshops for families, from painting to pottery. Instead of just looking at stuff, the kids get to make something. A lovely, tactile way to pass a wet afternoon.

Step back in time at the Thai Hua Museum: In Old Town, this museum sits inside a beautiful 1934 mansion and tells the story of the Chinese families who built Phuket during the tin-mining days. It’s got interactive bits and old artifacts, and there’s something nice about watching the rain come down against the old shuttered windows while you wander through the island’s history.

Mall day like the locals: When the rain really starts coming down, this is exactly what many Phuket families do too, head to Central Phuket or Jungceylon in Patong and make a day of it. You’ll find cinemas, shopping, restaurants, cafés, indoor attractions, and soft-play zone like Oto Play Park at Central Phuket Floresta, where HOMA residents enjoy 20% off. It’s an easy way to stay dry while still getting out and about, and during green season you’ll often find seasonal promotions and discounts throughout the malls.

Cook a Thai meal together: A family cooking class is a great rainy afternoon. Everyone gets a wok, and you go home actually able to make a pad Thai or a curry. Most classes start with a quick market trip if the rain lets up.

Do It Like a Local

Green season is when Phuket feels most like itself. The tourists thin out and the island goes back to its own pace. This is where families usually find their best moments.

Picnic at Nai Yang Beach: Up north inside Sirinat National Park, Nai Yang is protected by a natural reef, so the water stays much calmer than the rest. You won’t find big tourist beach clubs here. Instead you’ll see local families spreading out mats under the big shady trees, sharing grilled chicken and the kids splash in the shallows. Bring a mat and some food and join in, this is exactly how Phuket families do on a weekend.

Eat what’s in season: Green season is peak fruit season, and the markets are full of it. This is the time for mangosteen, rambutan, longan, langsat, and if anyone’s feeling brave, durian. Turn a market trip into a family fruit-tasting. It’s cheap, it’s fun, and it’s about as local as it gets.

Shop the markets: Rain clears the crowds but the markets keep going. Naka Market on weekends and Chillva Market in town are where locals actually shop and eat. On Sundays, the Lard Yai walking street on Thalang Road turns Old Town into a big food street. Most stalls are covered, so a passing shower just adds to the mood.

Go at the island’s pace: Maybe the most local thing of all: don’t fight the rain, go with it. When it pours, Thai families just slow down with a long lunch, a nap, a coffee while it passes then head back out once it clears. Plan your days like that and the rain stops feeling like a problem.

A Few Practical Tips for Green Season in Phuket

Gear Up Wisely: Pack lightweight rain jackets instead of umbrellas. They keep your hands completely free to manage bags or hold onto little hands, and they won’t blow inside out in a gust of wind.

Download the Essential Apps: Before navigating the island, get Grab and Bolt on your phone for seamless taxi rides. Add LINE MAN or GrabFood for those stormy nights when absolutely nobody wants to leave the living room to look for dinner.

Healthcare Peace of Mind: Phuket boasts world-class international medical facilities. If a child falls ill, Bangkok Hospital Phuket and Siriroj Hospital offer exceptional pediatric care nearby. Just ensure you have comprehensive family travel insurance sorted before flying.

Stay Flexible: The families who absolutely fall in love with Phuket during the green season are the ones who treat a surprise downpour as part of the tropical adventure, not a ruined day.

Settling In With HOMA

Green season is a lot nicer when you’ve got a proper home to come back to. If you’re stuck in one small resort room, a rainy afternoon can feel like forever.

That’s exactly the problem living at HOMA solves.

Instead of spending the afternoon in a single hotel room, you have space to spread out with a separate living area, a fully equipped kitchen, and shared community spaces where kids can play while parents chill out. When the weather clears, you’re ready to head straight back out and make the most of the island again.

And if you’re staying a little longer, green season starts to feel less like a holiday and more like everyday life in Phuket. You settle into the island’s rhythm, discover local markets, enjoy seasonal fruit, and learn that some of the best family memories happen in between the sunshine.

When the rain clears, you’ll be glad you stuck around.

Thinking about a family stay this green season? Take a look at HOMA’s flexible living options in Phuket and find your family’s base for the season ahead.
