Sacred Corners of Phuket: A Guide to Local Temples

The Phuket beaches, parties, and food are incredible, but there’s a whole other side to the island that people just zoom past. Everywhere you look, from the hills to the Old Town, you’ll see Phuket local temples. Located on chill hills, in the old neighborhoods, and on quiet streets are these absolutely amazing Buddhist temples that locals actually hang out at.

They’re super peaceful, totally free entry (maybe just drop a few coins in the donation box if you want), and honestly, they’re some of the best spots to chill out when you need a break from the super crowded beach scene. Plus, they make for some seriously fire Instagram photos.

Here are six temples you absolutely need on your list.

Phuket Big Buddha – The Ultimate Viewpoint

Phuket Big Buddha

You’ve 100% seen this on Instagram or TikTok. The Big Buddha stands 45 meters tall on Nakkerd Hills. If you’re coming to Chalong Bay or southern Phuket, it’s one of the first things you will notice. It’s covered in white marble that glows amazingly in the sun. Even though it’s not a full temple complex, monks are usually around, and the vibe is calm and respectful.

People go to pray, make merit, or  just check out the incredible 360° view over Chalong Bay, Kata, and Karon.

Local Tip: Don’t rush. Find a spot on the terrace, sit, and allow at least fifteen minutes to pass. Watch the fishing boats leave the bay and let the silence settle around you.

Disclaimer: The Big Buddha is now temporarily closed. Please follow the safety instruction.

Wat Chalong – Phuket’s Main Temple

Wat Chalong temple

Wat Chalong, located in Chalong subdistrict, is the biggest and most visited Buddhist temple in Phuket. Locals and visitors are there year-round for festivals and blessings. Travelers come to learn about Buddhism and check out the stunning architecture across the large grounds.

The main attraction is the huge Phra Mahathat Chedi, which supposedly holds a piece of the Buddha’s bone. You can go up for a sweet view of the temple and the Chalong area. They also have wax figures of famous monks that look so real, and are continuously adorned with layers of gold leaf by respectful visitors as a symbol of respect and gratitude.

What to Do: Participate in traditional merit-making activities like lighting candles, offering lotus flowers, and applying gold leaf to Buddha statues. Many visitors have their fortunes told or receive blessings from resident monks.

Wat Mongkol Nimit – Old Town’s Go-To Spot

Wat Mongkol Nimit

Right in the heart of Phuket Old Town, you can’t miss Wat Mongkol Nimit or Wat Klang as locals call it. You can see the temple roof often from the photographs at the end of Soi Romanee and the historic neighborhood.

The main hall is decked out in gold and traditional art. The complex is a blend of Thai temple style and Chinese-Portuguese in the area. Also, Wat Klang is a center for congregation and a school at the same time. During major events, like the Vegetarian Festival, the courtyard changes into an outdoor kitchen. It’s a place where life happens, where people find each other, and where the community is alive.

Local Tip: Visit in the morning to witness the community waking up. Buy hot fried dough from a vendor, find a bench, and observe the routine. The people are the show.

Wat Koh Siray – Hidden Views Alert

Wat Koh Siray

Wat Koh Siray is just a few minutes from Phuket Town but flies under the radar. The temple sits on a quiet hill on Siray Island (connected by a main bridge).

Climb the 100 or so steps by prayer bells and protective dragon sculptures to find a beautiful hall with an 18-meter-long Reclining Golden Buddha. The statue has been a focal point of worship for decades, with locals regularly stopping to light incense and pay their respects. You’ll also see a golden rock inspired by Myanmar’s famous Kyaiktiyo Pagoda

The views from the top stretch across Sapan Hin and Phuket Town, especially pretty on clear afternoons.

Local Tip: Free entry,  though donations are welcomed and appreciated, dress modestly (cover up), and remember to take your shoes off before going inside.

Wat Phra Nang Sang – Phuket’s Oldest Temple

Wat Phra Nang Sang

This temple in Thalang is over two centuries old and has been designed by Thai and Chinese mythology. Instead of one consistent look, the grounds are packed with an eclectic mix of statues, colorful art, and random decorations.

You’ll find mythical creatures, giant figures, and unexpected funny sights (like a statue of a policeman without arms next to a lion). It’s quirky, and fun. They’re always adding new stuff, so every visit feels a little different. It’s a living testament to creative religious art interpretation and the continuous devotion of its caretakers.

Local Tip: This is one of Phuket’s most historic spots. Check out the murals in the main hall. Even if the vibe is pretty easy-going and fun, being respectful is a must!

Wat Khao Rang Samakkhitham – The Local Favorite

Wat Khao Rang Samakkhitham

Wat Khao Rang is up on Rang Hill and isn’t very easy to find, which is exactly why the locals love it. It’s calm, simple, and never overrun with crowds.

Mostly, the locals come on weekends to make merit. This means it’s a great place to see real, everyday Buddhist life that has no tour groups, no shops, just peace. If you want an authentic, quiet visit, this one is worth the little effort to find.

Local tips: Take your time here. Sit quietly, see how the locals light incense, offer flowers, make merit, and just enjoy the moment.
